Metro Boomin is taking his name from the production credits to the character-select screen.
According to HotNewHipHop’s October 2 report, the producer will be a playable fighter in OnlyHands, an upcoming hip-hop fighting game preparing for an October 8 premiere at New York Comic Con. The reported roster also includes Kodak Black, Denzel Curry, NLE Choppa and Boosie Badazz. (hotnewhiphop.com)
A Familiar Energy for Rap and Gaming Fans
For anyone who remembers Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY, the appeal is easy to understand. Put recognizable artists in the arena, give their characters some personality, and let fans settle the matchup with a controller.
OnlyHands brings that idea to a different generation of artists. HotNewHipHop reports that Republic Records partnered with Nothing Projects Interactive on the project, while the game’s website promotes Metro Boomin’s world premiere. (hotnewhiphop.com, onlyhands.game)
The Gameplay Has to Deliver
Rap Ritual’s take: the roster gets people looking. The fighting has to keep them playing.
Distinct moves, responsive controls and characters with personality could make this more than a novelty. The real test will be whether each artist feels like a fighter worth learning.
The reported October 8 premiere gives fans something to watch for. It should not be confused with a confirmed general release date or platform announcement.
Who would you want added to the OnlyHands roster?
